About the Assignment
For this assignment, we were asked to analyze several magazine advertisements of our choice in a specific content. The specific content was based on the negative effects different advertisements had on men and women. I chose two advertisements from the magazine, Cosmopolitan, advertising Aussie hair care and It's A 1O hair care. |
Purpose, Audience, Genre
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to analyze magazine advertisements using a specific criteria. We picked various ads from different magazines based on the major points stated by Jean Kilbourne's video Killing Us Softly 4 - these points describe the negative effects that advertisements have on men and women. For example, most fashion advertisements use very thin and skinny models - this sends the message to women of any age that they need to look like that in order for that certain product to look the same on them. After picking the ads of our choice, we were to pick out the different messages that were being presented on them to solidify Jean Kilbourne's point that advertisements do a lot of harm. I believe I succeeded at the assignment by following the criteria that I was given and introducing my own opinion of how these ads portray men and women. Audience: The audience of this essay is anybody who reads magazines, or who actually pays attention to the ads in them. However, anybody can read this essay and receive the same message. Genre: The genre of this essay is and analysis. According to the textbook for this class, an analysis needs to following requirements: summary of the text, attention to the context, a clear interpretation of judgment, and reasonable support for the conclusion. I believe I meet every requirement:

Evaluation of Essay
This assignment was to analyze a few ads of our choice based on a certain criteria. I picked ads based on how they portrayed messages to me and how I received them. The strongest part of my essay is the body paragraph about the It's A 10 hair care ad. This ad was very easy for me to break down and analyze. The way the woman is portrayed is definitely in a sexual manner - advertising hair products in a sexual manner? That was my exact question the first time I saw it. With the woman being shown the way she is, it made it very easy to provide details of how women are publicly down graded and are constantly being told what to look like. |
Revision Notes
I did a little better on this essay than I did on the Film Evaluation! After the revision from my peers, I changed a few grammar errors and change my paragraph structure around. After I got my graded copy back, I saw all kinds of mistakes that I just simply missed during revision. |
